About National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER)

On 28th August 2006, the Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh announced for the establishment of the National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) at Bhubaneswar, which will be operated under the umbrella of Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) of Govt. of India. He announced that the NISER will facilitate the synergy between research and higher education in science. He had stated categorically that NISER will be compared with the best institutions in the country in terms of facilities and faculty.The Atomic Energy Commission, in its 182nd meeting held on 16.03.2007 approved the proposal for establishment of NISER at Bhubaneswar. Till the permanent campus comes up, NISER will be functioning from the beautiful campus of the Institute of Physics (IOP), Bhubaneswar, a renowned Institute with state-of-art infrastructure that includes an excellent library, a large computer centre and a number of outstanding research laboratories. Dr. Viyogi, the director of Institute ofPhysics was given the official charge of NISER.

The government of Orissa agreed to give 300 acres of land to build the campus of NISER at Jatni in Khordha district, near the Barunei hills and about 20kms fromBhubaneswar railway station. Dr. Anil Kakodkar, Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission, visited the plot of land along with the members of the steering committee of NISER project on 30th March 2007. The government of Orissa also agreed to give about sufficient number of flats near IOP for hostel and staff quarters till the permanent campus comes up. Later Government of Orissa also gave 10 acres of land adjacent to the IOP campus to build NISER's own city center which will include a morden style guest house and auditorium.
